On March 3, 1972, NASA launched the Pioneer 10 space probe on a mission to explore faraway Jupiter. It would later become the first man-made object to leave the Solar System.
That’s voyager 1 you plebian
First, that’s not how you spell “plebeian.”
Second, the reblogger is correct. Voyager 1, not Pioneer 10, was the first space probe to leave the Solar System. I should have said “first to achieve escape velocity” or something to that effect.
I hate it when a post gets popular with a big, fat mistake in it. I’ve already been publicly corrected at least four times by rebloggers, including this Slinkyhed character. (Not one private note on the matter.) I reblogged the first correction, admitting my error and fixing the original post — too late since the mistaken version is out there making its way through Tumblrland. C’est la vie.
What really, really galls me is that Mr. Slinkyhed (aka, “Just another blog yo”) had to call me a name: “you plebian.” It’s mildly embarrassing to be called out on a mistake. It’s flat-out insulting to be, um, insulted. Yes, yes, it’s not like he called me “fuckface” or said my mother was a whore. And yes, this is the internet where name-calling is par for the course. But I expect better from Tumblrites, especially when it comes to a post that has nothing to do with a hot topic like politics, gender, or Bronyism.
Anyway, I was upset enough to send a message to the name-caller: “You don’t have to be an asshole about it.”
Feeling low, I sank even lower. Such a plebeian thing to do.
